Ngong road derby to highlight Kenya Cup rugby weekend
19 December 2013, 16:07
Nairobi - Kenya's greatest rugby rivalry resumes on Saturday 21 December 2013 when
Lunch Bar Quins host Impala RFC at the RFUEA Grounds in a Kenya Cup
fixture originally slated for Saturday 16 November 2013.
When these two sides face off, the rugby
fraternity comes to a standstill, eagerly awaiting the outcome of this
match. This is much more than a game of rugby and the honors associated
with it, it is also about the neighborhood bragging rights (only a fence
separates the two sides), it is about who is the strong, sure, superior
side at the close of business.
Away from the sentiment behind this
fixture to its purpose. Quins currently lie fifth on the log on 22
points, 13 adrift of leaders Top Fry Nakuru and just the one point
adrift of third placed KCB. They occupy the final semi final slot and
after a a somewhat start to this season's campaign that saw them win
three and lose one of their opening fixtures, Enos Otieno's charges fell
to a heart breaking 30-28 loss to KCB last weekend and cannot afford
another slip up, bearing in mind the tough schedule of matches remaining
as they seek to make the league playoffs after missing out last
Visitors Impala,placed twelfth on the
fourteen team log have again not had the best of starts to a season.
They have won just once win in five outings to date, losing the four. It
is significant to note that they pulled their sole win, an 18-0 result
againstt KCB and will need to prove that it was no flash in the pan when
they set out to play Quins. With a playoff berth slipping away from
their grasp with each passing week, the young side would surely derive
pleasure from throwing a spanner in the works and further complicating
their rivals' title ambitions.
Key players for Quins will include Isaac
Adimo, Wilson Kopondo,Nick Barasa and Patrice Agunda while Impala will
look to Joel Omer, Anthony Oyugi, Nato Simiyu and company.
The other Kenya Cup fixture will see KCB
host Kisumu RFC at the Lions Den in Ruaraka, a match carried over from
its originally November 2 date.
The Kenya Cup will take a break for
Christmas and New Year festivities after these two matches to resume on
Saturday 11 January 2014 with a full set of fixtures. (Additional reporting courtesy KRFU)
