Mwamba clinches inaugural women's rugby league title

14 July 2015, 18:36

Nairobi - Mwamba secured the first Kenya Rugby Union women's league tournament with an emphatic 26-7 win over Kenya Commercial Bank in the final fixture of the season.

The side began the game on level footing in the league standings after a round-robin tournament in which all the teams played each other twice.

The Bankers began the game brightly and were on the scoreboard early through a Philadelphia Olando try, which she converted herself, to make the score 7-0.

However, Mwamba regrouped through a quick-fire hattrick by Celestine Masinde, of which Janet Owino converted two, to move the Kulabu Ladies into a 19-7 lead at half time.

Mwamba did not allow KCB back in the game after the break and continued to dominate proceedings in the second half with Sinaida Aura adding the their fourth try of the afternoon, which was converted by Owino to settle the game at 26-7.

The finished the season on 53 points with KCB second on 49 points and Quins some way off the pace in third on 28 points.

"I'm happy the league has taken off and we have had five committed teams. We are looking at having more teams next year," said KRU director in charge of women's rugby Paula Lanco.
