Nairobi - Kenya’s wait for a gold medal at the Africa Athletic Championships in Marrakesh continued on Monday when two of the country’s brightest stars fell short in the 5000m.
Janet Kisa and Commonwealth Games champion Mercy Cherono were both expected to challenge for gold. However, both could not live up to expectations.
Kisa finished third to claim bronze, while Cherono finished outside of the podium places in sixth.
Kisa clocked a time of 15:54.05 for third place, with Ethiopians Genzebe Dibaba and Almaz Ayana taking silver in 15:42.10 and gold in 15:32.72 respectively.
“I am pleased to be the top Kenyan and look forward to the World Cup next month. It has been a good season for me,” Kisa is reported to have said by The Star.
Meanwhile, Bernard Mucheru was the only Kenyan to make the men’s 400m semi finals after finishing second in 46.38.
“The tiredness is gone but I am not in the best of shape,” said Mucheru.
“I have barely recovered from the food allergy reaction that has left a wound on my inner thigh.”
Mucheru’s heat was won by Botswana’s Pako Seribe in 45.62.
