Kipchumba bounces back in Beijing

23 September 2015, 12:57

Nairobi - Mariko Kiplagat Kipchumba has gone ahead and won the Beijing Marathon title after a disappointing performance at the World Marathon Championships.

On his win, Kipchumba was delighted that he was able to bounce back and win the race, especially since it was his first time running in the Beijing Marathon.

"I feel happy to have gone to Beijing and won," he told xinhuanet.com. "We had high hopes of Kenya doing well at the world championships and they failed in marathon. Now that has been corrected."

"It was the first time for me to run the Beijing Marathon, I am very happy to win."

“I have been preparing for the race for nearly all the year.”

On the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics, the Kenyan runner says that the selection process needs to change if they are to send their best team to Brazil.

"We need to recapture the gold in Rio," the 41-year-old said.

"The country has strong runners, but the selection is not done right, we need to push for new selection criteria and see if it will deliver the medal. At my age, I don' t know, but I may be still strong to challenge."
