The women's defending champions, Orange Telkom (Kenya) humbled
Uganda's Weatherhead 6-0 in one of the games played at the Lugogo Hockey
Arena. Jackline Wangechi scored two goals before Andry Onaicho, Judith
Apiyo, Bety Onala and Rose Mbulo picked one a piece.
Kenya Police (men) were also in winning form with a 2-0 victory over
Union Bank Nigeria. Samuel Wokilla and Felix Okoth picked the goals for
the Kenyan team.
Trustees Hockey Club from Ghana for the men were also 7-0 winners over another Ugandan side Kampala Hockey Club.
In another men's game, Yobe Desert Rollers (Nigeria) drew 2-2 with
Sikh Union of Kenya. Idris Dakumi and Liman Mohamed scored for Yobe
Desert Rollers, while Hagai Sikhila and George Mutira were on the score
sheet for the Kenyan side.
"We have had a good start of the tournament and we call upon Ugandans
to come in big numbers and support the game of Hockey," Jackie Namyalo,
a Uganda Hockey Association official told Xinhua in an interview.
The African tournament which runs Jan. 11-19 brings together top two
teams in both genders across leagues on the continent. It is also
recognized as the flagship event of the Africa Hockey Federation.
The other foreign teams taking part include Golden Sticks (Ghana) and
Weatherheads (Uganda) for the men, while the women will have Strathmore
(Kenya), Ghana Revenue Authority (Ghana), Heartland Flickers (Nigeria)
and Tanzania's Hockey Club Twende.
