Kenyan rugby leagues resume after Christmas break

10 January 2014, 14:24

Nairobi - Action resumes in full swing across the three Kenyan leagues after the Christmas break. There is a strong push for playoff qualification in all three leagues and this should make the remaining set of fixtures all the more interesting.

Champions Top Fry Nakuru are on top of the Kenya Cup standings, seven wins from seven outings, seven bonus points collected along the way. They travel to Nairobi to face seventh placed Homeboyz at the Strathmore Grounds in Madaraka. It should be an interesting encounter, Nakuru facing what is probably the first of a series of tough matches as the regular season draws to a close. Nakuru are all but assured of a semi final playoff berth as they seek to retain their title but that is no justification for them to take Homeboyz lightly. Homeboyz are very much in contention for a semi final berth despite lying seventh, they just need to keep churning out the wins. They can draw inspiration from their recent form which has seen them defeat Impala and put Strathmore to the sword.

Another interesting fixture pits Nondies against Strathmore at the Jamhuri Park. Nondies lie fifth on the log and have a realistic chance of reaching the playoffs. They however need to navigate Strathmore, post a positive result that will keep their playoff chances alive. For Strathmore, this is an opportunity to bounce back from last month's 12-50 humiliation at the hands of Homeboyz and get back on track with confidence ahead of a challenging month ahead.

KCB are at home to Mombasa Sports Club looking to gather enough points to keep them within the playoff berths. They currently lie fourth and know that a good result against Mombasa puts daylight between them and the chasing pack all vying for a playoff berth.

Another interesting encounter pits ninth placed Western Bulls and Blak Blad at the Kakamega High School grounds. Bulls, in their second Kenya Cup season have displayed good rugby, unlucky to lose a few fixtures along the way. They will look to register a victory against Blak Blad who have done well to rise to eighth on the fourteen log.

Impala RFC welcome Eldoret RFC as they seek to register their second win of the season and climb higher up the table, away from the relegation zone.

Two matches pitting hosts Lunch Bar Quins against Mwamba and the Machine-Kisumu encounter slated for Saturday have been postponed to Saturday 1 February 2014.

Mwamba requested for the postponement of their fixture against Quins owing to the fact that they are missing five players Collins Injera, Horace Otieno, Mike Agevi, Dan Sikuta and Humphrey Kayange who are away attending a training camp with the Kenya Sevens team in South Africa. Kisumu also requested for the postponement of their fixture citing logistical challenges that make it difficult to honor their fixture in Nairobi this weekend.
