Nairobi - Kipchoge Keino, the President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya
(NOCK), is desperate for Kenyan athletes to qualify for the 2016 Rio de
Janeiro Olympic Games.
The President of NOCK is willing to spend $3.3 million towards the
development of Kenyan athletes so that they will have all the necessary
resources needed in their bid to compete in the 2016 Rio Games.
"We are aware that to reach where we are, our athletes sacrifice a lot
and invest a lot of their time in training and as NOCK, we do not take
that for granted because we are aware many countries would love to be
where we are right now," Keino told coastweek.com.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist made these remarks during an
inaugural awards ceremony that will become an annual event. The ceremony
was held to reward the athletes that excel in an Olympic sport.
The ceremony will hopefully encourage the athletes in Kenya and help
them achieve greatness in their respective sport. Keino has pleaded for
the sports federations and committees to run an effective organization
so that the Kenyan athletes can achieve success within the future of
"I challenge sports federations to provide effective leadership to their
organizations to help produce results and create sound and credible
governance structures," remarked the 75-year-old.
"Last year, I observed major improvements not only in athletics which
has been our stronghold, but also other events. That is why today we are
presenting awards to many other disciplines besides the runners."
