Kenya upbeat ahead of volleyball meet

20 September 2013, 14:00

Nairobi - National volleyball team head coach, Sammy Mulinge, is confident his side will make an impression at the upcoming World Championships.

The Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) recommended that Algeria and Kenya be the representatives of Africa in the global event because of their good rankings internationally.

The tournament kicks off in Mexico on October 3 and ends on October 12.
“Kenya has missed out on most international age group tournaments. The Mexico Championships are a great opportunity to expose our players,” Mulinge said.

He also tipped the fast rising star, Violet Makutano, to display outstanding performances at the world championships.

He was confident that players with international volleyball experience would help the team achieve positive results.

Among such players are Gaudencia Makhokha, the team captain, and Agripina Kundu, the Libero player.

Both have played in the African Club championships.

Kenya is likely to face a mammoth task in the competition having been drawn in Pool ‘A’ alongside USA, Brazil, China, Cuba and Turkey.
