Kenya names squad for Deaflympics

07 June 2013, 14:04

Nairobi - The athletics team to represent Kenya in next month's 22nd Summer Deaf Olympics in Bulgaria was named in Nairobi on Thursday.

This followed the commendable performances of the athletes during the trials that concluded Thursday at the Nyayo National Stadium organized by the Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK).

The 800-meter winners Rebecca Matiko and Ann Nasimiyu, women's 200m victor Berly Atieno and women's 5000m finalist Serah Wangare made the cut.

Others are David Omondi (men's 100m), Faith Nukani (women's 400m) and Simon Kibai who will compete in the men's 1500m race.

The athletes were drawn from 10 regional trials conducted last February in Nairobi, Coast, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Central, Eastern and Western Kenya regions to participate in the two-day event.

They will represent the country at the summer games scheduled to take place in Sofia, Bulgaria between the July 27 and Aug. 4.

The Deaflympics Games which take place every four years are globally contested by deaf and the hard-of-hearing athletes in different disciplines including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball and swimming.
