Kenya name squad for World Cup rugby qualifying

Nairobi - Kenya coach Jerome Paarwater named a 26-man squad Tuesday ahead of
their title defence at the upcoming Confederation of African Rugby’s
Division 1A Championships that kick off on Saturday June 2014 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
This year’s championships serve as the final
round of African qualifying for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the winner
earning a direct berth to the tournament that will be played in England
and Wales. The squad, captained by Lunch Bar Quins lock Wilson Kopondo
is based largely on the players who featured in South Africa’s Vodacom
Cup between March and April as part of the Tusker Simba XV.

his sevens colleagues Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Patrice Agunda
and Lavin Asego while French based winger Willy Ambaka who was expected
to make the travelling party misses out through injury.

announcing the squad at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel.

Chairman Mwangi Muthee said, “I express my sincere thanks to all those
who have helped the Kenya national team to be ready for their most
important assignment to date -- the final push for our goal to
participate in the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England and Wales”.
African Breweries Managing Director Joe Muganda wished the team well in
Madagascar, urging them to put up their best show as they seek to not
only defend their African title but qualify for the Rugby World Cup.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario, in his comments, said, “ I thank the
team for training hard for the challenge ahead. We are looking forward
to seeing them emerge victorious in Madagascar and booking the ticket to
represent Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.”
