Kenya name squad for World Cup rugby qualifying

24 June 2014, 16:30

Nairobi - Kenya coach Jerome Paarwater named a 26-man squad Tuesday ahead of their title defence at the upcoming Confederation of African Rugby’s Division 1A Championships that kick off on Saturday June 2014 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

This year’s championships serve as the final round of African qualifying for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the winner earning a direct berth to the tournament that will be played in England and Wales. The squad, captained by Lunch Bar Quins lock Wilson Kopondo is based largely on the players who featured in South Africa’s Vodacom Cup between March and April as part of the Tusker Simba XV.

There are, however, five notable additions in Kenya Sevens skipper Andrew Amonde, his sevens colleagues Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Patrice Agunda and Lavin Asego while French based winger Willy Ambaka who was expected to make the travelling party misses out through injury.

"We have prepared adequately, we are on track. We have done the hard work and I am confident that we shall do well in Madagascar”, said Paarwater while announcing the squad at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel.

Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Mwangi Muthee said, “I express my sincere thanks to all those who have helped the Kenya national team to be ready for their most important assignment to date -- the final push for our goal to participate in the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England and Wales”.

East African Breweries Managing Director Joe Muganda wished the team well in Madagascar, urging them to put up their best show as they seek to not only defend their African title but qualify for the Rugby World Cup.

Cabinet Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario, in his comments, said, “ I thank the team for training hard for the challenge ahead. We are looking forward to seeing them emerge victorious in Madagascar and booking the ticket to represent Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.”
