Kenya eyes more Olympic medals in 2016

Nairobi - The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) harbors hopes that the
nation's athletes will medal in other sports besides track and field
events at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
This according to Kipchoge Keino, the NOCK chairman, who visited Rio
this week on a five-day inspection tour of venues for next year’s Games.
“As always, we will do our best in athletics. It is a sport in which
we can parade our talent to the world,” he told Standard Digital Media.
“But we also want to perform to the best of our abilities in all
sports, which is why we are here in Rio - to get a feel of the
conditions under which we will compete, analyse the programme and
understand the infrastructure; things like local transport and the
entire organisation of the Games.”
Keino knows what is required to win at the highest level; having won
two gold and two silver medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games and
1972 Munich Games.
He added that he was “very impressed” with how preparations for the Games were shaping up.
“I think the games will be wonderful. People from around the globe
will be watching, and everyone wants to see the world’s best athletes in
action,” he said.
“I believe the Rio 2016 Organising Committee will put up the best edition of the Games that the Olympic movement has ever seen.”
