Kenya Prisons receive boost

18 May 2015, 14:47

Nairobi - The Kenya Prisons Sport Department has received a much needed boost in the form of 16 new athletes.

Among the 16 are Conseslus Kipruto, a steeplechase champion, as well as 800m runners Anthony Chemut and Evans Kiprorir.

"Sports is a very important department in the Prisons Service, we seek to promote and develop talent in Kenya," said Benjamin Njoga, the deputy commissioner of Kenya Prisons.

"Our volleyball teams are the top sides in Kenya. We have been a powerhouse in athletics, that's why we are injecting fresh blood in the department to continue with the sporting culture.

"We had a very few slots, and the panel of selectors considered many aspects that included age, consistency and commitment of the individuals in sports to enable us to get the best."

Kenya Prisons has not recruited new athletes since 2010.
