KCB Rally heats up as drivers buckle up

05 June 2015, 18:09

Nairobi - The fourth round of the 2015 KCB Kenya National Rally Championship will get underway on Saturday with 52 crews all waiting anxiously for the race to begin.

The race will take place on a private farm at the VOI branch of Kenya Commercial Bank. The national-2WD category has slowly but surely gained more interest with the rivalry of Sammy Nyorri and Eric Bengi attracting spectators.

The national-2WD is considered a step towards the big guns, Manvir Baryan (Ford Fiesta), Jaspreet Chatthei (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo10), Ian Duncan (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo10), Carl Tundo (Proton), Quentin Mitchell (Skoda ST2000) and Tapio Laukkanen (Subaru Impreza), who are all in the main category.

Nyorri considers Bengi his most competitive rival as he thinks he has the better car even though they race with very similar cars. The 41-year-old surprisingly sees himself to be quicker than him though.

"I'm second in the championship with 61 points Bengi leading with 62.5. He is my strongest rival. He has a much more superior car although we drive similar cars (Toyota RunX). I believe I’m faster than him. Mombasa should be the venue to make for the lost points. I hope I can score maximum points there," Nyorri told Daily Nation.

Bengi, however, has a slightly different attitude to their so called rivalry and believes that they are just two drivers in the same category.

"There is no rivalry at all. We only happen to be in the same category," said the Kenyan lawyer.

"We had a clear plan from last year and we have not lost focus. Our plan is to bring a 2wd in premier division. That's what we are focusing on. Other benefits have come in pursuit of that goal."

Up and coming driver, Waigwa Murage, leads Group S class ahead of the race and has spoken about his teams short term ambition as well as their long term goal.

"Our plan is to finish all events and be crowed KNRC Group S champions. As for the rest of the season, our plan is to finish all events we enter and continue our steady pace," said Murage.
