Nairobi - World record-holder Patrick Makau has withdrawn from the Berlin Marathon with an inflammation in his left knee.
Makau, who set the world record of 2 hours, 3 minutes, 38 seconds in Berlin in 2011, says he wanted to attack it again "but now the first thing on my mind is to fully recover from this injury so I can return to training."
He was diagnosed with the injury at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where he was ordered to rest until the inflammation subsides.
Makau also won the Berlin Marathon in 2010.
Some 40 000 athletes are entered in the event on Sept. 29.
