Infighting at Athletics Kenya

Nairobi - Athletics Kenya has refused to recognize the election of
Wilfred Bungei as chairman of its Nandi County Branch.
Bungei, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games 800m champion, was
elected as chairman on Wednesday during a special branch meeting where existing
chairman Abraham Mutai was ousted.
The Nandi branch chose to remove Mutai from the position
because they were recently informed that he was recently convicted of
incitement by a local magistrate’s court.
The branch members says the organisation’s constitution
excludes anyone with a criminal conviction from being a chairman.
However, Isaiah Kiplagat, president of Athletics Kenya, told
Daily Nation that the ousting was also unconstitutional.
“Article 15 of the AK constitution states that an office
bearer may be removed from office if the Executive Committee so recommends and
the Annual General Meeting resolves by two thirds majority of the members
present that such an office bearer should be removed,” Kiplagat said.
“Nandi County branch appears not to have adhered to this
requirement. Such an election is a nullity and will not be recognized by
Athletics Kenya. We can’t accept coups as these will bring anarchy and retard
the gains so far attained.”
The Nandi County branch members who elected Bungei include
coach Mike Kosgei, former African 800m record holder Sammy Kosgei and Atlanta
1984 Olympics finalist Edwin Koech.
