Homeboyz win Great Rift Blazing Sevens title

27 July 2015, 17:12

Nairobi - Homeboyz RFC were crowned champions of the Great Rift Blazing Sevens Championships held at the Nakuru Athletic Club over the weekend.

The champions had to work hard before winning the title though and despite winning two of their matches also drew one and lost one to score seven points in the five-team tournament which also featured teams from the Kenya Cup and Erick Shirley Shield Leagues.

Homeboyz kicked off the competition with a 12-12 draw with Nakuru RFC before beating Kabras 19-5 and Nakuru II 15-7 and then suffered a 15-0 loss to Wakulima in their final match.

The Great Rift Blazing Sevens Championships' tournament director Lameck Ongati said they were preparing teams for the National Sevens Circuit season which starts in August.

“We needed time to improve on fitness of players by engaging them in this tournament ahead of the National Sevens Circuit season coming over in a few weeks,” Ongati told FeverPitch at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday.

Homeboyz secured the championship win thanks to a superior point aggregate after they finished the tournament tied on seven points with Kabras RFC and Wakulima.

Kabras finished as runners up ahead of Wakulima who had to be satisfied with third place.
