Glory for Kenyan rally crew in Uganda

18 August 2014, 12:49

Nairobi - Ragbir Singh and navigator Timothy Challen came from behind to beat favourites Mohammed Essa and Gary Chaynes to the Pearl of Africa Rally title in Uganda.

The Kenyan pair started Saturday's final section 30 seconds behind Essa (Zambia) and Chaynes (Ivory Coast), but they put the foot down and secured a 42-second victory.

"It’s great. We gave it our best in that last section. Thank God the effort paid off," Singh told Uganda's New Vision.

Mohammed Essa/Gareth Dawe (Zambia) completed the podium with Manvir Baryan/Drew Sturrok from Kenya fourth.

Chaynes' second-place finish means he keeps top spot in the African Rally Championship with 101 points with Essa second on 93 and Jaspreet Singh a distant third with 58 points.

"My first task was to finish ahead of my ARC rivals and that I did, next stop is the Kenya Safari and the strategy will be the same," Chaynes said.
