Former KCB flanker Ochino passes on
07 March 2014, 13:31
Nairobi - The rugby fraternity has been thrown into mourning after former KCB RFC
flanker Anthony " Junior" Ochino passed away on Wednesday 5 March 2014.
"Junior" as he was referred to by team
mates, opponents and fans alike was not the biggest man on the pitch but
distinguished himself as a solid tackler with strong ball getting
ability at the breakdown and great attacking instinct.
He played for one club throughout his
rugby career, joining KCB RFC immediately after his high school
education at the Lenana School in 2000 and would entrench himself as a
mainstay of Michael "Tank" Otieno's side that won the Kenya Cup three
years in a row between 2005 and 2007. "Junior" also won other accolades
with the club, most notably the 2004 & 2007 Enterprise Cup titles as
well as the 2005 Impala Floodlit title. He was also a part of the Lions
squad that won the 2008 Bamburi Rugby Super Series after beating the
Rhinos 33-9 in the final.
He took a break from the game in 2011
when he left for the UK to complete his Bachelor of Science in Business
Information Technology at the University of Greenwich. He kept playing
his beloved sport in the UK, while keeping a close eye on the
proceedings back home especially on his club side. Upon his return, he
never stayed far from rugby, attending matches and even dedicating time
to assist in coaching his neighborhood team Laiser Hill Academy.
May God grant his family strength at
this moment and may his soul rest in eternal peace. Funeral arrangements
will be communicated in due course.
