Flash floods halt Dakar Stage 11

17 January 2013, 13:55

Argentina - Flash floods stopped the 2013 Dakar but the shortened 11th stage still left Stephane Peterhansel with a commanding lead three days ahead of the finale.

South Africa's Giniel de Villiers (Toyota Hilux) is in second place overall, 51min59 behind Peterhansel.

Two swollen rivers forced organisers to stop the cars after 53kms of the scheduled 219km stage on the sand dunes around Fiambala. Robbie Gordon (Hummer) was in lead followed by Ronan Chabot and Lucio Alvarez.

Peterhansel, who was in sixth place, was given a provisional 52-minute lead over Giniel de Villiers as he closes in on an 11th career victory in the Dakar.

The motorbikes completed their shortened stage before the rain hit.

Defending champion Cyril Despres increased his overall lead to 13min16 ahead of KTM teammate Ruben Faria and 18min08 in front of Francisco Lopez of Chile (KTM).

Kurt Caselli (KTM) won his second stage in his maiden Dakar. He beat Paulo Goncalves by 4min45 over the 452km stage from La Rioja.

Sarel van Biljon, who had seemingly withdrawn after struggling to complete stage 9, pushed ahead in the quads division.
Van Biljon had overcome torrid conditions to win the eighth stage in his category, climbing to third overall ahead of the rest day at the midweek stage of the race.

He fell out of contention and while he was 23rd in the 10th stage, he received penalties, dropping 20 positions in the standings and losing more than 14 hours on overall leader Marcos Patronelli.
