Doping common in Kenyan sport

17 December 2014, 13:20

Nairobi - A government investigation has found that doping is rampant across all of Kenya's major sports.

The investigation was conducted by a task force set up by the government to investigate recent allegations about doping in sport.

According to the Daily Nation, a report on the investigation claims that it is easy for Kenyan athletes to get their hands on banned substances.

“(Investigators) visited the identified shops and chemists and verified that indeed it was very easy to purchase very sophisticated performance-enhancing substances over the counter,” the report said.

The report was also handed to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at its Africa office in Cape Town.

It also found that the national Sevens rugby team were given banned substances, and that footballers used stimulants.

Isaiah Kiplagat, president of Athletics Kenya, also came under severe criticism in the report for failing to cooperate with the investigation.
