Cape Town - The two athletes who tragically lost their lives after suffering cardiac arrest at an Ironman race in East London on Sunday, have been named.
The two male competitors suffered fatal cardiac respiratory arrest during the swim leg of the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa.

They were named by Die Burger website as Kevin Staessen (28) from Johannesburg and Berton Bosman (38) from Pretoria.

According to reports, resuscitation efforts were performed on the athletes at the scene and in the medical tent. They were then transported to St Dominic's Hospital for further specialist investigation. However, after reassessment at St Dominic's they were pronounced dead.

The Ironman is comprised of a 1.9km sea swim, a 90.1km cycle and a 21.1km run.

Both Staessen and Bosman were competing in their first Ironman event and had swum more than 1km when emergency services picked them up.
