Choi bans mobiles from event

12 October 2011, 13:24

Seoul - South Korean golfer KJ Choi has announced a ban on spectators using cameras and mobile phones at his namesake invitational event this month, news reports said on Wednesday.

"I will make this tournament free of mobile phone ringtones and camera shutters," Kim was quoted as saying by the Chosun Ilbo daily.

"Spectators won't be allowed to carry mobile phones to observation sites."

Choi said he and his fellow golfers were seriously distracted by people taking pictures with their mobile phones, especially during critical shots.

"I was badly shaken when some 100 spectators clicked phone camera shutters as I was about to hit the ball (at a tournament this month in South Korea)," he said.

Despite sounding drastic, the ban is necessary to "raise the image of Korean golf" and help attract world-class players to the country, Choi added.

"Some spectators may feel inconvenienced but it is for the good of everyone."

Choi, who plays on the US PGA tour, will host the K.J. Choi Invitational in Yeoju county, 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of Seoul, from October 20-23.
