Changawa headlines Kenya Open Tennis tournament

11 June 2014, 15:03

Nairobi - Fresh from winning two medals at the African Youth Games, Ishmael Changawa will be one of the headline acts at this year's Real Insurance Kenya Open.

The annual tournament kicks off with the qualifying rounds on Sunday with the main draw starting on Monday and running until June 21.

The 16-year-old Changawa has been making waves at the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) High Performance Training Center in Morocco and he hasn't played in his native Kenya in several years due to conflicting schedules.

However, the Kenya Lawn Tennis Association (KLTA) in conjunction with National Olympic Committee has made sure that the Kenya Open is at a convenient time for Changawa this year.

The teenager, who won silver in the mixed doubles and bronze in the singles at the African Youth Games in Botswana in May, will be the one to watch at the event.

His doubles partner in Morocco, Stephanie Mbaya will also take part and the pair are likely to face stiff competition from defending champions Duncan Mugabe of Uganda and Caroline Oduor of Kenya in the mixed doubles.
