21 September 2014, 16:30

Nairobi - Kenya National Sevens captain Andrew Amonde has warned his side that the South African teams that take part at the Safaricom Safari Sevens event next week will be the favourites for the title.

A Sevens side from WP, the Sharks, Boland and Lions have confirmed their participation for the event at Kasarani Stadium, which takes place from September 26 to 28.

“The South Africans know the magnitude of the championship and the depth it has in honing skills of young players ahead of various international championships,” Amonde told Fever Pitch.

“It (Safari Sevens) is a development tournament that assist young players get exposure as they blend with experienced old guards.”

This year’s event will feature sides from several of the rugby world’s big teams, including sides from New Zealand, Argentina and England.

The hosts have been drawn in Pool B alongside South Africa, Wales and American Samoa.

“The event’s growth in stature has influenced more foreign teams as it is a forum coaches use to pick their squads for various international assignments,” the Kenyan captain added.

“The tournament allows fans to watch the likes of Humphrey Kayange, Collins Injera and Sydney Odhiambo live and this inspires the young players.”
