All set for Bamburi Super Series final
07 June 2014, 10:11
Nairobi - Kenyan
sides Nguvu Papa and UAP Kifaru will meet in the final of the 2014
Bamburi Rugby Super Series at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday 7 June 2014
with East African rugby's premier trophy up for grabs. Papa reached the
final with a 30-23 semi final over Bollore Chui while Kifaru stunned
defending champions Ndovu 22-19 in sudden death extra time. Both
fixtures were played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County last
importance of this tie is not lost on both sides, the Bamburi Cement
sponsored Papa side made up of players from KCB, Mwamba and Homeboyz
eager to lift the trophy and cap what has been a successful campaign.
They will come into this tie holding the psychological edge over Kifaru,
having defeated them 8-6 in round robin play on Saturday 3 May in
Kakamega. Papa also hold a physical advantage over their opponents, and
it will be up to Head Coach Curtis Olago to fuse this with his tactics
as he looks to close the season with a trophy for Papa who were semi
finalists last term.
there is a strong case for Kifaru who are making their first ever
appearance in the championship match. They showed great character in
bundling champions Ndovu out of the competition, winning the physical
and mental battles in last weekend's cliff hanger that was eventually
settled by Harun Lubisia's penalty in the second period of extra time.
They had earlier negotiated their escape from a spot of bother when they
ran off with a 35-22 win over Uganda's Hima Rwenzori in Nakuru on
Saturday 24 May, a result that ensured their continued participation in
the tournament by way of securing Pool B's last available semi final
slot. Throw the small, or not so small matter of the varsity composition
of this franchise and the Bamburi Rugby Super Series final is surely
going to be one for the ages.
will rely on the likes of Bush Mwale, Jacob Ojee, Brian Sagara and
Louis Kisia to ensure that the trophy is headed to their cabinet.
Rwenzori have in their ranks drop kick specialist Harun Lubisia who has
already weighed in with three drop goals in this year's campaign, George
Mutuku and Rocky Aguko as they seek to end up on the correct side of
the score sheet.
match kicks off at 1.30pm will set the stage for the international
friendly pitting Kenya's Tusker Simba XV against South's DHL Western
The third place playoff pitting outgoing champions Ndovu and Bollore Chui will be played at the Impala Club from 12.00pm.
