All players must sign contracts - KRU

30 September 2014, 15:50

Nairobi - The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) confirmed that from now all players who intend to play for the national side must sign a new performance-based contract.

The statement comes after 17 players have been discarded following a disagreement between the Union and players over the renewal of their national contracts.

The senior players boycotted training over the weekend after the Union cancelled their existing contracts without prior knowledge.

“The KRU reiterates that the Kenya Sevens management is ready to accommodate all players deemed good enough to represent their country. A decision has been taken that all contracts will be performance-based rather than of full-time entitlement once someone has been selected for the national team,” KRU Chairman Mwangi Muthee said.

“So long as one is ready to sign the contract, even the existing senior players are welcome to push for a place in the Kenya Sevens team. Clearly, with promise of young players exposed in the Safaricom Sevens, Kenya can be able to build an indomitable team, going forward.”
