Nairobi - Athletics Kenya has released to names of 11 athletes that will compete
in the marathon event at the World Championships in Beijing in August.
The men’s team is headlined by world
record holder Dennis Kimetto (personal best 2:02:5) while Wilson Kipsang
(2:03:23), Mark Korir (2:05:41), Felix Kipchichir (2:06:59), Lucas
Kimeli (2:07:17) and Luka Kanda (2:07:20) will also run.
Meanwhile Edna Kiplagat (2:19:50) leads
the women's contingent, followed by Jemimah Sumgong (2:20:48), Helah
Kiprop (2:27:29), Visiline Jepkesho (2:24:42) and Janet Rono (2:26:03).
"We sent out notices to all these athletes," said AK vice president David Okeyo.
"They had to confirm to us their
availability. [Eliud] Kipchoge wrote to us saying he was unavailable. He
said the time between his run in London and the World Championships was
too short for his preparations.
"[Caroline] Rotich was initially in the
list, but she has not confirmed to us if she is willing to run in the
Beijing World Championships so we cannot have her in the team.
"When you look at these athletes, they
have competed in big city marathons and they have the required
experience. They have posted faster times of 2:06 and below for men and
under 2:22 for women. It is a strong team."
