Sony, HTC, Samsung win mobile awards

19 August 2013, 12:55 Duncan Alfreds

Cape Town - Smart devices by Sony, Samsung, Huawei and HTC have been honoured by the European Imaging and Sound Association.

The Sony Xperia Z tablet was named tablet of the year by the organisation which represents magazines in 20 European countries.

The water and dust resistant tablet was a hit with the judges as a large percentage of smart devices meet watery deaths.

The HTC One smartphone was named best European advanced smartphone.

This device has a 1.7GHz Krait 300 quad core processor and 2GB of RAM in an all-aluminium body. The phone also features a Kid Mode that limits the use of the device for little people.

In the consumer smartphone category, the Huawei Ascend P6 was the winner.

The devices from the Chinese manufacturer have quietly been wooing over consumers because, in part, of the relatively lower cost than compared to the top brands as well as decent specifications.

Samsung won in the best social media phone category with its Galaxy S4 Mini smartphone.

The device costs around half the price of the bigger brother S4, but has a dual core processor as opposed to the 1.9GHz quad core processor.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII won the European mobile phone category in 2012.

Despite its size, the S4 Mini also supports higher speed LTE networks, and comes with an 8 megapixel camera.

All products nominated for the awards have to be available to the member magazines for evaluation by 1 June in the year that the prize is given.
