Safaricom recognised for VUMA offering

15 November 2013, 12:29

Cape Town - Safaricom has won a prominent award for its VUMA online offering that enhances local financial inclusion.

The company won the Rural Telecommunications Award at the just-ended AfricaCom, the continent’s biggest information and communications technology exhibition and conference that was held in Cape Town in South Africa.

Safaricom won the tightly-contested award ahead of rivals Econet Solar, Helios Towers, Orange, Sky Vision and Vodacom.

Launched in June this year, Safaricom’s VUMA online offering affords off-grid customers the ability to have lighting and charging for their mobile phones while paying through the popular and easy mobile payment system, M-PESA.

Safaricom was nominated in four of the 14 awards that ICT companies in the continent contested for.

It however fell short in the Best Mobile Money Service (for its M-Shwari offering), Most Innovative Service (Cashless Payment Solution) and the Industry Personality of the Year (Betty Mwangi-Thuo: General Manager of Financial Services).

The sixth AfricaCom Awards annual gala, which was held in Cape Town in South Africa, celebrated the triumphs and innovations of the continent’s telecommunications markets.

The event celebrates and acknowledges some of the industry’s best achievements that have taken place across the continent over the past 12 months.

A total of 14 prestigious awards were announced to an audience of 500 of Africa’s most influential figures.
