Man jailed over bomb-making tips

29 November 2010, 14:36

Beijing - A man in China has been jailed for publishing instructions on how to make explosives on a website owned by Chinese search engine Baidu, state media reported.

A court in Beijing recently sentenced the man surnamed Feng to six months in jail for "spreading ways of committing crimes", the Beijing News said on Sunday.

The court found Feng, 21, had compiled a "terrorists' handbook" using information he had gathered from the internet on how to build more than 10 types of explosives such as a petrol bomb, it said.

The Beijing Morning Post said on Saturday that Feng uploaded the manual twice to www.wenku.baidu.com for his amusement.

The handbook had been downloaded 116 times and read more than 2 000 times since Feng first published it on the website in November in 2009, according to the report.

The court urged Baidu to strengthen its inspection of content on its websites and "delete illegal and harmful information in a timely manner", it said.

The reports did not say when Feng was sentenced.

China has the world's largest online population of more than 420 million users, according to the latest official count.

Beijing operates a vast system of web censorship, sometimes referred to as the "Great Firewall of China". It blocks access to any content the government deems unacceptable, ranging from pornography to political dissent.
