Logitech: It's game on

30 July 2013, 16:37 Duncan Alfreds

Cape Town - Logitech has launched a new line of input devices as the company refocuses on gamers.

The Logitech G range of products will be aimed at gamers who spend lots of time in front of PCs and often cause peripheral devices like mouses and keyboards to wear out.

"The reason G is such an important focus for us, is because gamers expect us to push the limits as far as they do. Every inspired design choice the team has made, and late-night engineering arguments serve one purpose, to help gamers play at their best. When science wins - gamers win," said Yousef Atwan, country manager of Logitech South Africa.

The new devices have been designed to specifically accommodate the way gamers use their peripherals, the company said.

Mouse buttons have been covered with rubberised coatings to improve performance during game play and the Logitech G510s Gaming Keyboard has 18 dedicated buttons to ease game functionality.

"For heavy contact zones, Logitech has added fingerprint-resistant coatings, while palm areas feature a hydrophobic coating to help keep your hands from sticking," the company said.

Headsets feature surround sound to give gamers an advantage in anticipating the challenges in a particular title.

"With Dolby Headphone 7.1 surround sound, you’ll hear up to seven discrete channels of audio data plus a Low Frequency Effects channel," Logitech said about the device which has washable ear cups.

While the debate between PC and console games has been raging among aficionados for years, new consoles are struggling to surge in sales.

According to Time magazine, sales of the Xbox and PlayStation consoles in US declined 29% and 15% respectively, though it may also be ascribed to games waiting for the latest versions.

Another factor that may negatively impact on consoles is the fact that the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles do not feature backward compatibility.

To make up for the one-dimensional nature of consoles, manufactures have included many PC-like features like watching movies to entice users.

The biggest threat to traditional gaming may yet emerge from the growth of mobile devices like smartphones, especially as the devices become more powerful and manufactures increasingly look to integrate traditional games with mobile features.

Logitech said that the new line is not yet available in SA.
