Kenyan portal wins mention in prestigious African awards

online portal ‘DukaLangu’ has landed a major honour by being named among the prize
winners in a prestigious continental competition.
winners of the Orange African Social Venture prize were named Wednesday night
in Cape Town South Africa, where ‘DukaLangu’ won the ‘most favourite prize’ in
the competition, as voted for by users of telecom giant Orange’s pan African web
is an online shop that offers customers a wide range of products at
competitive prices. The site also provides Kenyan entrepreneurs and designers
with an excellent development opportunity by enabling them to market and sell
their products online.
It however fell short of the top three prizes which could have won funding from Orange.
The top three winners on the night were Cameroonian start-up
QuickDo which provides books in digital format for readers, The Ivoire Job project
which is an Ivorian online job search platform and Tunisian company Chifco,
which offers a system for saving energy when using high-consumption devices
both at home or in a workplace environment.
They were all awarded funding worth 25,000 Euros (KES 3 million).
The prize, which has enjoyed considerable success since its launch
in 2011, aims to support the development of entrepreneurs and start-ups
offering solutions that use information and communication technologies (ICT) to
meet the needs of people living in Africa.
