Cape Town - A news organisation has apparently been attacked in a hack attack, reports have said.
According to a post on mybroadband, IOL, the online division of Independent Newspapers, has been hit by a DDOS (Distributed denial of service) attack on Wednesday for publishing an article deemed to be supportive of Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe.
The news has spread through social networks and Twitter users have apparently confirmed the attack.
"IOL hit by hacktivist attack for publishing an article supporting Mugabe," tweeted Georgina Guedes (@georginaguedes).
The website was unavailable on Wednesday, though it was unclear whether IOL was aware that the site was down.
The organisation continued to tweet its stories, but links would not open respective pages.
After publication on News24, IOL acknowledged on its Facebook page that the website was down.
"IOL is having problems! We're aware that the site is down, and we're working hard to get it back up again... bear with us."
