Here's why Facebook loves WhatsApp

Nairobi - Facebook has done a number of deals to entrench its position as the top social networking site on the globe.
WhatsApp in many ways represents the ideal platform for the California-based company to attract not only a larger audience, but also a more global one.
Check out these reasons Facebook loves WhatsApp:
- WhatsApp has about 450 million users. But unlike Facebook, a far higher percentage of WhatsApp users are real people who use the application on a regular basis to communicate with friends and family.
- There are 19 billion messages sent and 34 billion received via WhatsApp each day, in addition to 600 million photos and 100 million video messages.
- Most of WhatsApp's growth has been developing markets like Asia, Latin America and Africa. Adding those users to Facebook would make the social network truly global and give it an unprecedented view into the lives of all people around the globe.
- WhatsApp is growing fast. It is estimated that around one million new users are joining the platform every day. The application seems to shrug off competition all other social chat applications, including Facebook.
- The WhatsApp audience is young. Facebook has been having some problems in the US with teens turning to Twitter, but with WhatsApp, Facebook could potentially attract and energise an entirely new demographic.
- The addition of WhatsApp will entrench Facebook's portfolio. The company intends to make itself the only social network destination and WhatsApp should dovetail well with the purchase of Instagram.
- Facebook will exploit WhatsApp's footprint on mobile devices. The chat app was designed to mobile communication and Facebook use the technology to better tailor its mobile offerings, especially as it looks to expand in developing markets.
