Facebook takes down homophobic game

05 June 2013, 10:08

Nairobi - The supposed homophobic video game Call of Taburetka is being taken down by Facebook after complaints.

The game is based on real events on 17 May during a rally to mark International Day Against Homophobia in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Players recreate the events when a group led by a priest attacked pro-gay rights marchers leaving at least 17 injured.

Call of Taburetka translates to Call of the stool. Apparently a stool was thrown at the marchers.

The Huffington Post reports that Facebook is taking the game down after many complaints were received.

The game's apparent developer, a Georgian named Kakha Giorgashvili, has responded to critics of the game on Facebook, saying the game is not homophobic but merely a re-enactment of the Tbilisi march:

Dear friends, this game it not anti-gay. it just describes what happened on may 17. From author.

Gay rights advocates do not agree with Giorgashvili's explanation.

Facebook requires app developers to comply with its community standards, which prohibit hate speech on the basis of "race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition."
