Chiefs urged to adopt social media

05 November 2013, 12:35

Nairobi - Traditional leaders have been urged to embrace technology in a bid to curb the surging fears of insecurity in the country.

Kajiado Deputy Commissioner Mwangi Kahiro said that the local chiefs had to complement government efforts in monitoring the security situation.

He urged the chiefs and their assistants to open up accounts on such social platforms as Facebook and Twitter and subsequently interact with as many locals as possible.

An administration officer would monitor the two accounts around the clock.

“The locals will be able to notify us in case of an emergency and we will respond to the emergency promptly,” said Kahiro while attending an induction ceremony for Christians in Matasia Location.

Kahiro added that the administrators would have to attend IT classes for them to work efficiently with new technology. They would also be required to acquire internet-enabled phones for them to sustain the social network accounts.

Success of this project may attract emulation by other counties that experience similar insecurity incidences and may be restore the situation, Kahiro said.

Kahiro exuded confidence that interaction between the administrators and the locals would increase the situation in the county, as it would further provide a platform for individuals willing to share sensitive information to authorities to do without fear of victimization.

The proposal comes a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to increase the security situation in the country.
