BlackBerry updates social apps

03 April 2013, 17:59 Duncan Alfreds

Cape Town - BlackBerry is racing to expand its app market for its BlackBerry 10 platform which is seen as critical to driving user adoption.

On Tuesday, the company announced that updated versions for Twitter and Facebook for the new platform were available on BlackBerry World.

Version 10.0.1 of Facebook makes greater use of geo-location to interact with friends and the Twitter app has been expanded to include more content in the social network.

The company launched the BlackBerry 10 platform in January with the Z10 smartphone and 70 000 apps.

"The ecosystem is what makes the platform scalable and successful, and that's why we've put so much focus in ensuring that at launch we have 70 000 apps," Alexandra Zagury, BlackBerry managing director for South Africa and Southern Africa told News24 at the launch of BlackBerry 10.

The success of the platform is critical for BlackBerry after losing market share to smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhone.

The Canadian-based company sees the Z10 and Q10 devices as a re-energising its brand, particularly in developed markets where the company is targeting the corporate market.

"We intend to lead the move from mobile communications to mobile computing - true mobile computing," BlackBerry CEO Thorstein Heins said when BlackBerry 10 was launched.

The company though, is looking to capitalise on the dominant market share of it BlackBerry devices in developing countries where its success has been due, in part, to its unlimited BlackBerry Internet Service.

"It's true our company has faced challenged in parts of the world, but here in Africa, BlackBerry 10 is important," said Zagury.

The apps are free downloads from BlackBerry App World which was renamed to reflect an expansion of the content available from the online storefront.
