Bill Gates tops super wealthy list

04 March 2014, 11:20

Cape Town - The rich list of wealthy individuals indicates that technologists have continued to grow their wealth.

Bill Gates has, according to Forbes, regained his title of world's most wealthy individual this year with an estimated fortune of $76bn.

But the former chair of Microsoft continues to sell shares in the company, and it is likely that he will be passed by Steve Ballmer as the largest shareholder in the company.

Ballmer's wealth has climbed to $19.3bn since his departure as CEO, reflecting the overall trend for the top wealthy technologists who have collectively grown their assets by around 40%.

Second place belongs to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, but at $48bn, he is way behind Gates.

Rich South Africans

Facebook's rising share price has boosted founder Mark Zuckerberg whose fortune made him one of the fastest rising billionaires on the Forbes list. He climbed to sixth place with a doubling of his personal fortune to $28.5bn.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos grew his wealth from $25.2bn to $32bn, but was edged out of third place by Google CEO Larry Page at $32.3bn. Both Page and Sergey Brin have benefitted from a surging Google share price.

The top woman on the list of wealthy techies is Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs. As the largest Disney shareholder, she also backs the Ozy Media start-up.

Forbes reported that the US leads the wealth list with 492 billionaires, followed by China with 152 and Russia with 111.

Wealthy South Africans Johann Rupert at $7.6bn made number 173 on the list, followed by Nicky Oppenheimer (205) with $6.7bn and Christoffel Wiese (506) with his fortune of $3.2bn.
