Kenya's electoral body unveils campaign finance rules

12 August 2016, 14:19

Nairobi  (Xinhua) -- Kenya's electoral body on Thursday published campaign finance rules that set limits on spending by political parties and candidates during campaigning in 2017.

The Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) capped presidential contenders' spending at a maximum of 52 million U.S. dollars, members of parliament 330,000 dollars, and governors, senators and woman representatives 432,000 dollars.

The electoral body capped spending by members of county assemblies at 103,000 dollars. It said political party expenditure should not exceed 150 million dollars while contributions by a single source for a political party should not exceed 30 million dollars.

IEBC said in a statement that any political party or candidate flouting the regulations is liable to a fine not exceeding two million shillings (20,000 dollars) or a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.
