Kenya to Begin Receiving Proposals July 25 on Electoral Changes

19 July 2016, 19:08

Nairobi - Kenyan lawmakers will receive views from the public on July 25 and July 26 on proposed changes to the East African nation’s electoral law following the establishment of a joint committee of government and opposition officials.

The lawmakers are seeking views on integrity of the electoral commission’s top officials, recommendations of legal means for their removal from office, as well as policy and institutional changes to strengthen the agency, according to a joint newspaper statement by both chambers of parliament.

Last month the country’s national assembly proposed giving the supreme court 30 days, up from 14 days, to settle disputes, and remove the Independent and Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s mandate to resolve disputes involving political party nominations.

In April and May Kenya’s main opposition group, the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy, held street protests over alleged corruption at the electoral agency.
