Joho, team risk life imprisonment over Malindi chaos

23 March 2016, 14:28

Mombasa - Mombasa Governor, Ali Hassan Joho and six other ODM leaders are facing charges of robbery with violence over the chaos witnessed during the recent Malindi by-election.

Joho, his Kilifi counterpart Amason Jeffa Kingi, Woman Rep Aisha Jumwa, Senator Stewart Madzayo, MPs Suleiman Dori  (Msambweni) and Agostino Neto (Ndhiwa) could thus end up spending the rest of their lives in prison if convicted.

The seven, who had been summoned Tuesday to record statements with the CID are now facing arrest for defying police orders.

While responding to the summons, Daily Nation reports that Joho said he did not have time to record a statement immediately but will do so on Thursday.

He also claimed that the government was intimidating them because they lost the seat to ODM.

Several Jubilee supporters including the Kabete MP, Ferdinand Waititu are said to be among the victims of the robbery with violence in the by-election.

Joho's bodyguards were also withdrawn following the chaos, with The Star reporting that they are also facing charges of robbery with violence.
