Uhuru and ex-MPs risk contesting over tax payment

21 January 2013, 15:04

Nairobi - Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto, and a number of cabinet Ministers and ex-MPs  may be barred from contesting in the general elections by the Independent  Elections and  Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for non-payment of taxes.

The Standard reports the electoral body is considering a petition that it officially received from civil society leaders, who filed and won a court case against refusal by 209 MPs to pay their taxes.

They insist that leaders who have not cleared their taxes have no business participating in the crucial March general elections.
