Reprieve for Ondieki as court stops MCAs from impeaching him

Nairobi - Nairobi County Transport Executive Evans Ondieki got a reprieve after the High Court barred the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from impeaching him.
High Court judge Isaac Lenaola also ordered Nairobi governor, Evans Kidero not to fire Ondieki even if the MCAs decide to sack him, The Standard reports.
Human rights activists Okiya Omtata and Wycliffe Gisebe sued the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, the County Assembly and its interim Clerk for passing and approving a censure motion against Ondieki by Ngara Ward MCA Chege Mwaura on April 23 and violating due process.
They asked the court to call for the records relating to the impeachment proceedings as well as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) named in the suit ordered to conduct investigations into allegations that members of the Nairobi County Assembly were bribed in order to block the purchase of city buses.
They argued that matters complained of by MCAs on corruption accusations should be reported to the EACC or the Criminal Investigation Department and that the required day notice calling for dismissal of Ondieki was illegal.
