Raila: Kenya’s KES 17B lying in Swiss banks

05 June 2014, 08:12

Nairobi - The government has failed to recover close to KES 17 billion that was allegedly frozen in Swiss bank accounts, claims former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

According to Raila, the previous administrations had paid the money for some Anglo Leasing contracts but the British and Swiss governments did a follow up and the money was frozen, The Standard reports.

He also accused the government of using public funds to pay non-existent debts.

On Tuesday, Raila led the opposition in demanding for the return of KES 1.4 billion that was paid to two Anglo Leasing companies and the prosecution of the people who were involved in the scam. (Return Anglo Leasing cash, CORD demands)

Treasury made the payments to the two companies two weeks ago following a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, the two firms First Mercantile and Universal Satspace made a further claim of KES 3.5 billion over an unfulfilled intelligence contract.
