Nairobi - National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has approved a motion that seeks to have the number of MPs reduced.
The motion by Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambo seeks to reduce the number of constituencies to 141 from the current 290 and that of counties to 10 from the current 47.
He also wants the post of county woman representative scrapped, The Standard reports.
With regards to senators, Mutambo proposes that their number be reduced to 20. He wants each county to elect two senators, a man and a woman.
Mutambo has not left out Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), he proposes that their number should be reduced to 290 down from the current 1,450 elected MCAs and wants the provision for nominated MCAs scrapped.
Last week the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) said the posts of senators and woman representative should be scrapped off to enable the government to address the problem of rising wage bill.
DP also dismissed plans to slash the salaries of civil servants saying it would not work and that workers would be demoralized.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto together with Cabinet Secretaries accepted to take pay cuts and also told parastatal heads to do the same to solve the problem.
