MCAs clash with SRC over salaries

Nairobi - The tensions between the Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) and the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) have worsened after the MCA accused the chairperson of the commission, Sarah Serem for giving misleading information to the public about their salary increment.
“Sarah Serem is trying to play games with the life of Members. She has deceived this nation several times. She said yesterday that the Members are earning KES 195,000. These are allowances. People live on their salaries, they do not live on allowances. What we are earning is not KES 195,000 it is paltry KES 79,000 gross and after tax, it goes down to around KES 61,000.What we want to state is that we are not ready and we are not accepting the demands put forward by Sarah Serem,” read a joint statement from the MCAs.
The MCAs further distanced themselves from claims that they had reached an agreement with the SRC claiming that those who had reached the so-called agreement were even not MCA members.
The Transition Authority and the Constitution Implementation and Oversight Committee have warned that the standoff between the two bodies was a big threat to devolution and that unless urgent measures were taken to resolve the stalemate, the county governments risked collapsing.
