Karua speaks out after Mpeketoni attacks, calls for talks

21 June 2014, 10:04

Nairobi - We in Narc Kenya wish to send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, our sympathies to the injured and Kenyans at large following the recent massacre of innocent citizens and loss of property and livelihoods at ?#‎Mpeketoni? and ?#‎Maporomoko? in Lamu County.

This comes after a series of other recent incidents of insecurity in Garissa, Turkana-Pokot, Nairobi, Baringo, Mombasa, Mandera, Wajir and Moyale.

Narc Kenya strongly condemns the heinous acts of crime that are aimed at destabilizing our Country and economy. The recent spate of crime is polarizing the Kenyan communities and creating tension.

Kenyans no longer feel safe in their homes, matatus, schools, shopping malls, places of entertainment, work and worship. The inadequate responses by our security agencies to these threats are worrying.

It is our sincere conviction as Narc Kenya that when our Nation is under threat, we need to stand together in unity of purpose to offer solution and support. Our Constitution provides for citizens participation in matters of governance.

The Executive has a role to play in this and to this end we call upon the President to unite Kenyans by convening a National forum comprising representatives of the County Governments, Political stakeholders, Religious Leaders and Civil Society to enable the Nation to reason together.

We suggest the following issues be taken on board for discussion:
a) Implementation of the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) report which focuses on redressing historical injustices as a critical step towards national cohesion and integration.

b) The citizens duty to participate and support the law enforcement agencies in securing the Nation.

c) Review and strengthen our law enforcement agencies and

d) Involving County Governments in matters security.

The Government should in keeping with our Constitution and best democratic practices listen and appropriately respond to the concerns of Kenyans.
