Jubilant scenes as Timamy retains Lamu leadership

21 November 2013, 15:43

Malindi - Issa Tamamy was evidently jubilant after the Court of Appeal reinstated him as the Governor of Lamu on Thursday.

The court in the process cancelled the by-election scheduled for next month.

A presiding team of three judges in Malindi made the ruling stating that Timamy was “validly” elected.

The ruling sparked celebrations from Timamy’s supporters who temporarily disrupted the Court’s out of exhilaration.

Timamy joined in the celebrations after the proceedings.

“I dedicate this victory to the people of Lamu who stood by me during the difficult time,” he said amid the celebrations.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) governor lost his gubernatorial seat after a High Court judge, Florence Muchemi, had revoked his election citing massive irregularities during the polls.

The petitioner, Fahim Twaha, had filed the petition seeking cancellation of the election on the ground that it did not reflect the will of the people.

The High Court had ordered Timamy to pay KES 4 million to meet the legal costs incurred by the petitioner.

Timamy was the only successful UDF governor in the entire country and the news of his reinstatement would evidently be welcomed by the opposition party.
