Nairobi - Tom Ojienda, a law professor at Moi University, has been elected to represent the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) while Eric Mutua retained the chairmanship of the organisation.
Ojienda won with a total of 1 659 votes beating the incumbent, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, with 1,431 votes to clinch the hotly-contested seat.
Abdullahi was gracious in defeat.
He conceded his loss before the counting of votes from the last polling station in a tweet saying, “The people have spoken. I congratulate Tom Ojienda as our representative in the JSC. My projection is he wins with about 300 votes more.”
He added that he had called Ojienda and congratulated him on his victory.
Abdullahi called on all lawyers, especially his supporters, to fully support Ojienda as their new JSC representative.
The JSC’s mandate is to promote and facilitate the independence and accountability of the judiciary and the efficient, effective and transparent administration of justice.
With 11 members in the JSC, one as an advocate elected by LSK members, Ojienda will now fill a key position in the organisation.
