Embakasi MP accuses govt officials of funds misuse

Nairobi - Embakassi MP has called upon the Ministry of Finance to investigate and act on the misuse of state resources by state officials.
James Gakuya decried the continued wastage of resources, especially the use of vehicles by state officers, which he said had remained unchecked for a long time.
He said that the bodies that were charged with the handling of the government vehicles were not effective in that regard.
Gakuya singled out the use of vehicles with a high consumption of fuel by Cabinet Secretaries.
“Fuel guzzlers should not be used by Cabinet Secretaries,” said Gakuya.
He called on the continuation of measures the President Uhuru Kenyatta, had initiated when he was Minister for Finance.
According to him, Kenyatta had instructed Cabinet Secretaries to surrender vehicles with high fuel consumption rates.
“The buck stops with the Ministry of Finance because it is the one that is in charge of the use of government resources,” said Gakuya.
Gakuya said that the checking of wastage of resources within the government by its officers would help reduce the government’s spending.
He said that reduction of wages, as proposed by some, would not address the problem.
“The government should find other avenues of checking expenditure including sealing procurement holes and checking corruption,” said Gakuya.
